Jerome Park Racetrack, in the Kingsbridge section of what is now the Bronx, opened in 1866. The park was the original home of the Belmont Stakes, which ran there until 1889 when the park closed to make room for the Jerome Park Reservoir. According to the text on the reverse side of this engraving, the winner of this race was the long shot "Mittie". Mittie is shown here at the start being left at the gate and restrained by his groom, yet ultimately he easily overcame the six other contenders to win by four lengths. 18th-19th Century Subjects , Horses - Sporting & Racing , Racing
