Fort Fisher commanded the entrance to the Cape Fear River upon which the city of Wilmington, N. C. was situated. At the beginning of 1865 it was the Confederacy's last door to the outside world. On January 15th, the Union Army and Navy lodged a simultaneous attack and the army, led by General A. H. Terry, swarmed the walls.
