  • DESCRIPTION: Ben Shahn (1898-1969) created this lithograph with stencil and hand-coloring in 1966. <BR><BR> "Written under the menorah is a well-known prayer of celebration recited during high religious holidays and at special family gatherings: 'Blessed art thou, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has granted us life and sustenance and permitted us to reach this occasion.' The large yellow letters to the left announce the title of the book, 'Haggadah for Passover.' The title is repeated in black with some additional information regarding the publication." – Prescott <BR><BR> This piece was printed at the Imprimerie Mourlot in Paris. The printed (lithograph) portions consist of the black and gray lines of the menorah and the black calligraphy. Stencils were used for the yellow calligraphy and the branching design. Gold leaf and other colors were applied by hand.

  • ADDITIONAL INFO: Signed in black brush lower right below red-orange chop. Printed by Mourlot in Paris. This print is identical to the frontispiece of the 1966 deluxe edition of Shahn's 1965 "Haggadah for Passover." It is one of the limited number of impressions pulled without the centerfold for distribution as an individual print.
