Richard Caton Woodville’s 1848 painting “War News from Mexico” was very popular and remains one of the most recognized American genre paintings. The American Art-Union purchased the painting in 1849 and commissioned Alfred Jones to make an engraving, retitled Mexican News, for distribution to its members. The American Art Union (AAU) is best remembered for the thirty-six engravings it published based on the paintings of some of the most luminous names in 19th-century American art. These artists include George Caleb Bingham, Thomas Cole, F.O.C. Darley, R.C. Woodville, Asher B. Durand, and William Sidney Mount.
