  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving was first issued to celebrate the great Compromise of 1850. This compromise helped to delay the U.S. Civil War for ten years. Twenty-two leading politicians of the day including Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, and Samuel Houston. The plate was reworked with a number of the principal figures being changed. These changes reflected a more pro-Union stance. The most noticeable change is the removal of John C. Calhoun's head which was supplanted by a beardless Abraham Lincoln (2nd edition). In this, the third edition a beard has been added. Third state of three. Engraved by H. S. Sadd.
