DESCRIPTION: Silas Deane (1737–1789) was an American merchant, lawyer, and statesman from Connecticut who played a pivotal yet often overlooked role in the early diplomacy of the Revolutionary era. A graduate of Yale College, Deane first gained prominence as a delegate to the Continental Congress, where he was instrumental in the creation of the Continental Navy and in securing military supplies for the colonies. In 1776, he was sent to France as one of America’s first diplomats, preceding Benjamin Franklin and Arthur Lee, to negotiate for arms and support from the French government. His efforts were crucial in paving the way for the Franco-American alliance that would later turn the tide of the Revolution.
