Map of the State of New York.

  • ARTIST: Samuel Augustus Mitchell

  • PUBLISHER: Published by S. Augustus Mitchell, Philadelphia.

  • MEDIUM: Engraving,

    DATE: 1831

  • EDITION SIZE: 16 3/4 x 21 1/4" (426 x 541 mm) plus narrow margins.

  • DESCRIPTION: In 1831 Mitchell issued his first atlas utilizing the copper plates purchased by him from Anthony Finley. Finley previously used them in the 1826 edition of his, "New American Atlas." Mitchell reissued the atlas, removing Finley’s imprint and replacing it with his own. There was some updating of the maps along with a new border design. This form of the atlas (folio) is most rare, with no copy in the Library of Congress and only two copies located by LeGear in her "American Atlases" bibliography. The maps included in the atlas were also produced as separately issued pocket maps of which this is one. Engraved by J. H. Young. The two insets are a map of the Hudson River from New York to Albany and a profile of the levels of the “Grand Erie Canal.”
