This map was complied by Elliot & Ames from Government Surveys. This map depicts the main ship channel into Charleston, at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. It shows Hog and Sullivan Islands, many channels and low-water marks, plus soundings, as well as a grid map of the city of Charleston. This map was likely made just before or close after the bombardment of Fort Sumter on April, 12th, 1861. This attack was the opening salvo of the American Civil War. Maps , Historical , Civil War
