This is the largest print depicting the dramatic winter crossing during the Revolutionary War, which led to a morale-raising American victory over the Hessians at Trenton the day after Christmas, 1776. Leutze did three paintings of this subject, the first was destroyed in Dresden Germany during WWII, the second was for this engraving and was done for Goupil, the third is the largest and most famous it hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
