  • DESCRIPTION: A fine map of Mexico covering an area from just north of Mazatlan to Acapulco and from Tehuacan to the Sierra Madres. A very ornate and highly decorative map with fabulous armorial title cartouche, sailing ships and compass rose. In the lower "key" cartouche two cherubs are shown watching and reaching for the tail of an Armadillo. An example from a Latin text edition of Blaeu's Atlas Novus. This was one of several atlases produced by Willem Blaeu and his sons, who were leaders in the 17th century 'golden age' of Dutch cartography. Blaeu produced key regional maps and some of the most comprehensive atlases of the era.
