  • DESCRIPTION: The title continues with, "'New Haven Green' is justly celebrated as being one of the most beautiful public grounds in the United States. The town was originally laid out in a square, half mile on each side, and subdivided by streets four rods in width, into nine squares, the central one of which was reserved for public uses. . .The chapel, and other edifices of Yale College, presenting an imposing range of buildings fifty rods in extent, are partially seen in the distance, fronting the western boundary of the Green. To show the various buildings, part of the numerous elms surrounding the Upper and Lower Greens, are omitted." John Barber was born in 1798 in Windsor, Vermont, and apprenticed to Abner Reed, a banknote engraver. He is known for producing a number of early historic view books of various states. This particular print is the largest known to have been produced by him and was issued and sold as a separate print. Scarce.
