  • DESCRIPTION: Said to be the largest engineering feat taken on - for the safe passage through 'Hell Gate' where the combination of rocks (reef) and tides 'damaged one out of every fifty boats' that entered the area. Explosives were placed in the tunnels to break up the 'reef' to a movable size. Upon completion, this part of the river was 26 feet deep - and far safer to navagate.
