  • DESCRIPTION: Anonymous two-panel lithograph with tint stone. American, c. 1870. A typical 19th-century black caricature. In the first panel, the black preacher is interrupted by a parrot squawking, "Pull down your vest." In the second, the congregation turns around in astonishment as the hidden parrot cries, "Wipe off your chin." Also typical is the exaggerated dialect used, as in "De day ob judgement am bound to gum."
