Winfield Scott was known as“Grand Old Man of the Army,” and “Old Fuss and Feathers.” Over the course of his 53-year career, he commanded forces in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Mexican–American War, the Second Seminole War, and, even the American Civil War. He applied for active duty at the onset of the Civil War but Lincoln initially turned him down. He is credited with conceiving the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that was used to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of the United States Army for twenty years, longer than any other holder of the office. He ran for president in 1852 in the Wig Party. 18th-19th Century Subjects, Portraits, Famous People
