  • DESCRIPTION: Mezzotint engraving by William Warner, after a portrait painted from life by John Nagle at Ashland in November 1842. Printed by H. Quig. An elaborate porthole portrait of Clay, the Kentucky statesman known as the "Great Pacificator." He was intimately involved in most of the great national political questions leading up to the Civil War, especially the admittance of pro- and anti-slavery states to the Union.
