Signer of the Declaration of Independence. On Nov. 1, 1800, in his second evening in the White House, he wrote his wife, "Before I end my letter, I pray Heaven to bestow the best of Blessings on this House and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise Men ever rule under this roof."

Stauffer records only two states of this famous portrait. This impression has all the title changes that would point to the second state, Stauffer does not point to the new publisher and the changed publishing date of 1821. As this information is 1/2" bleow the title it is possible it was removed from the impression that Stauffer catalogued.
