• DESCRIPTION: The American forces were ill-prepared for the War of 1812. Their troops were nowhere near as disciplined or trained as the British, and the country itself was divided on the war. As a result they suffered numerous stinging defeats in the war's early days. The military worked to improve itself and on July 5, 1814, at the Battle of Chippewa, those actions provided positive results - the American's claimed victory and proved that they could effectively combat a British force of equal size.

Colonel James Miller would go on to fight at Lundy's Lane, where he is perhaps best remembered in the war.
