Chase, Simon Cameron, and Edward Bates - each more privileged and more accomplished than Lincoln - had run for and lost the 1860 Republican presidential nomination. Lincoln's genius and character is evident in his forgoing personal feelings to assemble together this strong cabinet to lead the country through the divisive Civil War years.
