  • DESCRIPTION: Engrav'd by Geo. Graham. A very rare portrait of the second President of the United States. Adams is shown with his right hand gesturing outward. In his left hand, he holds a copy of the Federal Constitution to which he was a major contributor and defender. Sword on hip and “The Temple of Liberty” can be seen in the landscape through the window at right. Little is known about the engraver George Graham. It was known that he worked in mezzotint and stipple engraving and was in Philadelphia by 1797. Stauffer notes that he was working for publishers in New York in 1804, he produced several notable but rare images. “Of this clever engraver in mezzotint and in stipple little more is known than that he was seemingly located in Philadelphia. . . .” Stauffer.

  • CONDITION: Fair condition. Trimmed within image on sides, image size 17 3/16 x 10 15/16" (4.37 x 27.8 cm). Area of image loss along horizontal centerfold. Professionally restored. Visually good.
