John A. Noble

1913-1983

John A. Noble (1913-1983) was born in Paris the son of a painter. He moved to the United States in 1919 with his family. He became interested in wooden ships quickly, and spent time working on schooners and marine salvage. He studied in France at the University of Grenoble, and for a year at the National Academy. He lived and worked most of his live in and around Staten Island, New York. His images capture the disappearing wooden ships that once made ports like New York famous.
