John Paul Jones was an American painter and printmaker, born in Indianola, Iowa. He began life studying to be an engineer, but after serving in World War II, he shifted gears to become an artist, earning his MFA in printmaking in 1951 from the University of Iowa. He was considered a prominent American artist during the 1950s and 60s, so much so the "Time" magazine did a write up on him in 1962, and he received his first retrospective exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum the following year.
John Paul Jones taught at the University of Iowa, University of Oklahoma and University of California at Los Angeles, the latter of which saw him design and launch the school's printmaking program. Although best remembered as a printmaker, Jones also produced paintings and sculptures during his lifetime.
