Alexander Brook

1898-1980

Alexander Brook was an American artist and art critic, born in Brooklyn, New York. He is best known for his figurative paintings. Brook's first lessons in painting came at the age of twelve, when he was bed ridden with polio. He later took up study at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League, where he met his future wife, artist Peggy Bacon.

In 1930, Brook made an entry into the Carnegie International Exhibition of Paintings and won second place (Pablo Picasso won first). He entered again in 1939 and won first place (Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Marc Chagall came in second and third). in 1931, Brook was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, allowing him to travel Europe.
