Raphael Soyer

1899-1987

Raphael Soyer was a Russian-born American painter and printmaker known for his social realism. Born in 1899, his family immigrated to the United States in 1912 to get away from oppression and political turmoil within Russia. They settled in Bronx, New York where he would ultimately study at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. He had his first solo exhibition in 1929. The Whitney Museum held a retrospective of his work in 1967.

“From all that I have seen, I am more than ever convinced that art must communicate, and it must represent, describe and express people, their lives and times.”
