William Meyerowitz

1887-1981

William Meyerowitz was a painter and printmaker born in Gezelitz, Ukraine. His early training in art came as a sign painter in Gezelitz. After his family immigrated to the United States in 1908, he took up study at the National Academy of Design, where he met etching teacher William Mielatz.  Meyerowitz credited Mielatz in teaching him multi-plate color etching.

Meyerowitz married the celebrated artist Teresa Berstein, who later wrote several books on his life and art. He was a member of the Brooklyn Society of Independent Artists, Gloucester Society of Artists, and North Shore Arts Association. Meyerowitz had seventy-five one-man shows during his lifetime and is represented in numerous public and private collections.
