William M. Harnett

1848-1892

William Michael Harnett was an Irish-American still-life painter noted for being a master of trompe l'oeil, a technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion of being three dimensional. Harnett trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and traveled in Europe for a time during the 1880s. Harnett had a particular fascination with painting musical instruments, firearms and books.
