Augusta RATHBONE (1897 - 1990)

Augusta Payne Rathbone (1897-1990 was born in Berkeley, California on December 30, 1897. Following graduation from University of California in Berkeley, she studied in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and with Claudio Castelucho and Lucien Simon. While maintaining a home in San Francisco, she made many trips to New York and Paris. She remained in San Francisco until shortly before her demise in Palo Alto, California on March 19, 1990. Her work includes etchings, color aquatints, and oils of the French Riviera, the Sierra Nevada, and Canada. Member: National Arts Club; California Society of Etchers; San Francisco Women Artists; American Artists Professional League. Exhibited: Paris Salons; Oakland Museum; San Francisco Museum of Art, 1940 (solo); California Society of Etchers, 1947 (award); San Francisco Art Festival, 1951 (award). Works held: De Young Museum; California State Library; Brooklyn Museum.
