1815-1877
Studied law at Harvard, graduating in 1838, Was a librarian at the N.Y. Historical Society, 1842-48. In 1849 accompanied Mounted Rifle regiment to Oregon later becoming deputy collector of Customs at Astoria and was attached to the Indian Commission. In 1851 he took part in the McKee exploration of northwestern Calif. He later settled near Fort Steilcoom (Washington) and devoted himself to the study of Indian ethnology and linguistics. He died in New Haven.
