Daniel Maclise

1806-1870

Daniel Maclise RA was an Irish-British artist, best known for his historical and literary paintings, although he also worked as an illustrator for the likes of Fraser's Magazine. Maclise was born in Cork, Ireland and spent most of his life working out of London, where he'd moved in 1826 to study at the Royal Academy. Maclise had his first exhibition at the Academy in 1829, was made an associate member in 1830 and became a full academician in 1840.

Maclise is perhaps best remembered for his frescoes in the House of Lords. The prestigious commission, however, was never fully complete. Prince Albert's death in 1861 brought the project to a halt, but not before two frescoes were completed.
