Arthur Cohen

1928-2012

Arthur Cohen studied at Cooper Union with Edwin Dickinson and Robert Gwathmey from 1947 to 1949.  In 1950 he went to the Arts Student League to study with Reginald Marsh and during 1960 again with Edwin Dickinson who was teaching at the League. 

His work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of the City of New York, NY; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; New York Historical Society, NY; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; Provincetown Art Association and Museum, MA; and Cape Cod Museum of Art, MA.

Cohen received many awards among them the Guggenheim Award (1981), the Pollock Krasner Award (1986), and the Adolf and Esther Gottlieb Award (1987). He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1981, and one of his paintings was selected for the cover of Mary Oliver’s 1990 book of poems, "House of Light".
