Jerome Rettich

(1915-2006)

Rettich was a lifelong New Yorker, born in the Bronx in 1915. As a teenager he painted and leafed signs for businesses around the city and attended school at the Art Students League of New York. During World War II he was drafted and served as an artist in Florida. He went to work for JC Penny when he retuned, making posters and marketing designs for displays. Will Barnet, a friend and mentor, helped guide Rettich when he turned to abstraction.
