Elizabeth C. Brenton

Early 19th century

Little is known Ms. Brenton. It is believed that she was a resident of Newport and was possibly a descendant of Jahleel Brenton. It is recorded that the Perry’s lived in the Jahleel Brenton House located on Thames Street.

The following was found in Proceedings of the Rhode Island Historical Society, Vol. 3, 1895, Catalog of Portraits in the Picture Gallery of the Society. An elaborate copper-plate engraving was gotten up at the expense of Miss Elizabeth C. Brenton, in 1820. The plate which is 26 x 30 inches, cost Miss Brenton about $500. But few copies were ever struck off. The plate is now owned by the Hon. John G. Perry, of Wakefield, R. I.
