William Hanny was an American illustrator, born in Burlington, Iowa. His work was published in numerous newspapers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and St. Joseph News-Press. As the story goes, his career got started while working at a sawmill. He heard that people were making a bit of extra income writing jokes, and Hanny quickly discovered that even the lightest of jokes were made better with a picture. So, he got drawing.
