Larry Smith is better known as "Hillbilly" Larry Smith. A product of the depression, he wondered the countryside selling his art as he went, often bartering cartoon drawings for food and drink. Smith was a Texas-area cartoonist who was best known as the original art instructor to World War II cartoonist Bill Mauldin. Smith was known as one of the artist's that helped encourage William Henry “Bill” Maulden to his life in the art world. He is also reputed to be the creator of the "JACKALOPE". He also used others art for paper, drawing on the back of it. He created "LITTLE EVA", a newspaper daily comic strip of the 1930's.
