Paul B. Travis

1891-1975

Paul Bough Travis was an American artist, born in Wellsville, Ohio. He studied at the Cleveland School of Art with teachers such as Henry Keller. After serving in World War I he became an art teacher at the American Forces University of Beaune before returning to Ohio in 1920, where he took up teaching at the Cleveland School of Art.

In 1928, with the help of numerous sponsors, Travis made an eight-month trek through Africa, following a similar path as explorer Henry Morton Stanley. The trip resulted in an extensive collection of works, many of which are now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
