Abbott Graves

1859-1936

Abbott Graves was an American painter best known for his floral settings, especially those of gardens. He began his formal studies at MIT in Boston before traveling to Europe to further his learning. It was in Paris he met lifelong friend, Edmund C. Tarbell, an American Impressionist painter. After returning from Europe, Graves took up teaching at Cowles Art School in Boston until 1891 when he opened his own art school. He later moved it to Kennebunkport, Maine, where he lived most of the rest of his life.
