Russell T. Limbach

1904-1971

Russell Limbach was an American painter and printmaker, born in Massillon, Ohio. He studied at the Cleveland School of Art and worked at the Union Trust Company shortly there after, in the publicity department. After a year of study in Europe, furthering his lithographic talents, he returned to Cleveland where he worked as a political cartoonist for local papers and magazines.

Limbach was a member of the American Artists’ Congress and was commissioned by the Public Works of Art Project in 1934. He moved to New York in 1935 to work as a technical advisor for the Works Progress Administration's graphics workshop. He resigned in 1940 and began working at Wesleyan University in 1941, where he could remain for the rest of his life.

Limbach was exhibited widely through the 1930s. His first solo exhibition was held at the Kokoon Arts Klub in Cleveland in 1931. Other exhibitions across the US followed in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Limach's work can be found in the collections of many institutions, including the Cleveland Museum, Ohio; Art Institute of Cleveland, Ohio; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art (MoMA), New York; Whitney Museum, New York; and many others.
