John Henry Hill was the son of the artist and printmaker John William Hill, who was the son of the English watercolorist and etcher John Hill. John Hill was a founding member of the American Watercolor Society. John Henry worked closely with his father John William Hill learning watercolor and printmaking. His father and grandfather are well known as city view and landscape engravers and well as watercolorists.
John Henry Hill was influenced by John Ruskin and David Johnson and used a realistic approach to convey nature. He is the co-founder of the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art and was well known as an author and artist. He was a lifelong resident of West Nyack.
