Thomas Gibson was an English portrait painter celebrated for his depictions of prominent figures. Born in London, he became a founding director of Godfrey Kneller's Academy in 1711 and gained renown for painting notable sitters such as Dr. Henry Sacheverell, John Flamsteed, Sir Robert Walpole, and Augusta, Princess of Wales. Supported by patrons like John Poulett, 1st Earl Poulett, Gibson overcame a brief retirement due to illness in 1729 to resume his career, leaving a lasting mark on British portraiture.
