The Old Print Shop

American Master Prints 1900-1950

This is the on-line exhibit of our in print catalogue Portfolio. It has been several years since we have published a twentieth-century American Master Print issue of Portfolio. It was fun and interesting to pull this great group of prints together and evaluate the overall collection of American master prints in the gallery. One only wishes that more space were available, as there are so many other artists and images that could be added to this catalogue.

This issue features the work of a handful of artists where the gallery has a strong inventory. The selection process was difficult but enjoyable. I chose images that I liked and that worked well together. The cover is one of a group of white-line woodcuts by Blanche Lazzell that the gallery owns, but the catalogue contains a wonderful selection of work by Martin Lewis, Louis Lozowick, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, Benton Spruance, Gustave Baumann, Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and Gerald Geerlings.

The cover item is one of a group of Blanche Lazzell white-line color woodcuts the gallery has in stock. Lazzell's work in this medium is innovative and dramatic. Impressions from her blocks vary greatly and are generally rare.
