Painted by J. W. Hill. Engraved by W. J. Bennett. Printed c.1907. Plate was found in the studio of Currier & Ives when the firm was closed. Restrikes were printed at that time and are notable for the scratches in the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
"One of the most beautiful early views of New York City was engraved by William James Bennett from a painting by John William Hill. In spite of the faded condition of this copy of the print, the luminosity typical of Bennett's best work is fully apparent, and the composition, with its wealth of foreground detail, is one of Hill's finest..." - #50 from, "Pride of Place, Early American View."
