• DESCRIPTION: This historical view, titled "Urbs Domingo in Hispaniola," was created by Arnoldus Montanus and is featured in his 1671 publication, "De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America." The image showcases Santo Domingo, one of the earliest European-established cities in the Western Hemisphere.

Founded in 1497 by Bartholomew Columbus, Christopher Columbus's brother, it served as the capital of Hispaniola and the first Spanish colony in the New World. Santo Domingo remained a key center of Spanish authority until the conquests of Peru and Mexico. In 1586, the city was sacked by the English privateer Sir Francis Drake, who demanded a substantial ransom before moving on to Cartagena and St. Augustine. This illustration captures the historical essence and strategic importance of Santo Domingo during the colonial era.
