  • DESCRIPTION: Attributed to August Borget. <br><br> Auguste Borgete (1808-1877) was French artist best remembered for his drawings and lithographs of "exotic" places such as China and Hawaii. He traveled the world extensively, drawing everywhere he went. <br><br> Borgete landed in New York City in December of 1836 and quickly became fascinated with the city. The streets were desolate, however. The once bustling urban environment had fallen quiet because of a cholera epidemic, which had sent residents fleeing to the countryside months earlier. He remained in New York for only a brief period before venturing out into norther New Jersey, where he found inspiration along the riverbanks. Come January, Borgete was on a boat to Rio de Janeiro. <br><br>
