This is the first printed detailed chart of the highly important fishing grounds of Georges Banks. It is also the first chart by Wilkes. Surveyed by Charles Wilkes, Lieut. Commandant ... in U.S. brig Porpoise & schooners Maria & Hadassah. Drawn by J. Alden and W. May. Engraved by S. Stiles, Sherman & Smith, New-York. In 1524, the Florentine navigator, Giovanni da Verrazzano encountered Georges Bank and named it Armelline Shoals. Later, English colonists renamed it after St. George, the patron saint of England.
