DESCRIPTION: This etching depicts Breckinridge Long (1881–1958), an American diplomat and politician who served in the administrations of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Long is particularly remembered for his role during World War II as Assistant Secretary of State, where he oversaw immigration policies. A staunch nativist, Long made it exceedingly difficult for European Jews to gain entry to the United States during the Holocaust by imposing bureaucratic obstacles on visa applications. His restrictive measures drastically limited the number of refugees able to escape Nazi persecution, leading to widespread criticism from colleagues and historians alike. His tenure ultimately ended in 1944 after his obstructive actions came under scrutiny and public backlash.
