Graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1858, Dewey devoted his life to naval service. He rose to fame during the Spanish-American War when, with minimal losses, he successfully captured or destroyed the entire Spanish Pacific fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay. Remarkably, only one man under his command was lost, due to heat stroke. Following his victory, Dewey secured Manila, solidifying his reputation. In recognition of his achievements, he was named Admiral of the Navy in 1899, a position he held until his passing in 1917.
