DESCRIPTION: Title, date, and some notes along the left paper edge. This drawing depicts the wreck of the Texaco steam tanker "S. S. Lightburne" on the Southern shore of Block Island, about a quarter mile from Southeast Lighthouse. The tanker had left Port Arthur a few days earlier and met with stormy New England weather. <BR><BR>Reynolds Beal (1866-1951) was an American impressionist painter and pupil of William Merit Chase at his school in Shinnecock, Long Island. Beal was an associate member of the National Academy of Design, National Arts Club, American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, and the Rockport Art Association, among others. He had exhibitions at Clausen Galleries, Kraushaar Galleries, Shore Galleries, Vose Galleries, and The Old Print Shop.
