  • DESCRIPTION: The upper right drawing is of the civilian steam yacht "Free Lance" (Freelance) owned by F. Augustus Schermerhorn of NYC. Within two years, this vessel would be loaned to the Navy for use during the Spanish-American War. The upper left drawing shows the yacht "Departure" owned by C. B. Seeley- other fun details noted one being Capt. Chapman. The lower left drawing shows details of the shipyard (Greenport) including a boat named 'Ava.' Each drawing is titled and dated and contains color notes and other notations. Reynolds Beal (1866-1951) was an American impressionist painter and pupil of William Merit Chase at his school in Shinnecock, Long Island.
