  • DESCRIPTION: Walhalla is a Hall of Fame honoring German history and important German figures (artists, writers, scientists, politicians, etc). Its name is derived from "Valhalla" in the ancient Nordic religion. It was proposed by the Bavarian crown prince, Ludwig I, in 1807 in the hopes that it would help unify the fractured German states. Upon ascending the throne, he set about seeing it to fruition. He chose Donaustauf, Bavaria as its location and hired architect Leo von Kienze. The building underwent construction from 1830-1842. 358 steps must be ascended to enter. Inside, some 130 busts and 64 plaques have been placed since it opened in 1842. The Danube River can be seen in the distance.
