  • DESCRIPTION: Rare and important English produced map of the American Colonies. The main map covers an area from the North Carolina-Virginia border to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada with the inset map covering the Carolinas to northern Florida. It is the earliest map of the region that is based largely on contemporary English sources. Cartographically, this map is primarily based on three sources relating in turn to the areas of New England, New York/New Jersey, and the Chesapeake Bay. In the case of the two southernmost regions, the map relies on the Augustine Herrman map of the Chesapeake Bay. For the New England section of the map, it relies on the William Reed map of 1665. The inset map of Carolina is based on Ogilby and Moxon's map of 1672 and delineates via a dotted line and outline color the explorations of John Lederer. There are three states of the map: 1679 by Robert Morden and William Berry; 1684 (this example) and again 1712 by Christopher Brown. Changes from the first to second states include the addition of Philadelphia. Richly embellished with images of flora and fauna, ships, whales and even a scene of whaling off the southern coast of Long Island. From a historical point of view, the map provides a scarce record of English settlements of the time. Engraved by Walter Binneman. An important and very rare piece of Colonial American cartography.
