  • DESCRIPTION: Woodcut from German issue of Liber Chronicarum ( The Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartman Schedel. Published by Anton Koberger, Nuremberg, 1493. This work was the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century and a milestone in printing history. It contained hundreds of illustrations, ranging from portraits and Biblical scenes to human monstrosities. But it is best known for its town views--often the earliest printed views of the cities depicted. Drawn by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, many of them are accurate historical depictions of walled and fortified medieval towns. Some of the smaller images are stock cuts used several times to illustrate different cities or events. Even they are charming in their fancifulness.
